Recorded in early 2012 using a modified tape deck, discarded answering machine cassettes, guitar and field recordings, Tyler Powell created a series of endless tape loops originally designed for personal use as accompaniment to reading, resting and sleeping. ‘Outgoing Messages’ as presented here is a collection of extended excerpts from those original tapes which over the course of 45 minutes ebbs and flows into one seriously meditative experience.
Sparingly built out of minimal elements beginning with the chime of church bells and a slight tape warble, the album proceeds gracefully through a subtle pastiche of hand cut granular fragments that soften into rich rhythm’s and melodies as the repetition of the emotionally resonant loops fold on top of one another and new harmonies and dissonances emerge.
‘Outgoing Messages’ is a personal exploration of inner space through the patient investigation of classic minimal themes that should appeal to both those inclined towards the melodic pop sensibilities of Oval’s ‘Diskonkt 94’ as well as the grieving contemplation of aging and eventual death experienced in the works of William Basinski.
