about

The result of late night improv sessions and sonic experiments, TheBirdsAtThisHour is a brooding, paranoia induced collection of tracks drawn from collaborative and isolated recordings at prolific St. Louis visual artist, MC and dj/producer Stan Chisholm's home studio.
Originally released physically on bricks gathered from the banks of the Mississippi paired with a digital download, 18andCounting’s ‘TheBirdsAtThisHour’ is an exceptionally dense and hardened confrontation with the values of capital and habitual notions of historical progress. From the first hollow echoes of opener ‘Nogevity’ directly into the follow up ‘NoWinSituation’ and all the way through to the vicious album closer 'FuckingPig', Chisholm deals is terms of persistent negation, denying the promise of the future, invoking images of classes of elites perishing with no ceremony and offering no reassurance that “we gon’ be aight.”
A heady electro-acoustic mix of heaving industrial thuds, scraping atmospheric noises, field recordings and haunting strings more akin to Godspeed than Wu serve as the warped and degraded compositions over which Chisholm dishes out demonically pitch-shifted, nihilistic stabs at pop culture. Woven with live DIY recordings showcasing Chisholm's vocal acrobatics backed by his full band the Only Ensemble, the vibe here is influenced as much by the dense sound colleges of Public Enemy as it is by the industrial nightmare of Throbbing Gristle. With ‘TheBirds..’ Chisholm and his cast of collaborators deliver wildly explorative and boundary-pushing hip-hop asserting 18ac as one of the most engaging, challenging and original acts in contemporary Midwestern experimental music.
